SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A Spokane County Jail guard who was fired after an inmate died is trying to get his job back.

The union that represents Kenneth Downey says he should have been given consideration for 10 years of good service.

Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich (kuh-NEZ’-oh-vich) says Downey was fired for falsifying his log book and lying to investigators about making rounds every 30 minutes.

The inmate who died of natural causes in November went undiscovered for eight hours.

The Spokesman-Review reports another deputy resigned and two others who were truthful about not making rounds received lesser discipline.
