The Columbian
Published: June 11, 2010, 12:00am

Smokey Bear, Ranger Rick and — if forecasts hold true — bright sunshine will greet participants at a National Get Outdoors Day event on Saturday at Vancouver’s Water Resources Education Center.

The free event, at 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The University of Oregon’s men’s lacrosse team, birds of prey and Burgerville’s mobile food wagon will be on hand.

Other events include the following:

• A family fun walk from 10 a.m. to noon. Trail information also will be available, along with a Backpack 101 clinic.

• Families can learn to paddle a big canoe or kayak.

• Participants can learn about archery, disc golf, Dutch oven cooking and orienteering.

• Workshops on gardening and caring for wooden lawn furniture will be available for those who want to go outside, but stick closer to home.
