SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. (AP) — An East Valley High School student has been arrested for allegedly igniting the hair of a female student while the two were seated in class.

The 17-year-old student was booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention center for investigation of second-degree assault. His name was withheld because he is a juvenile.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Spokane Valley school shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. They were told the 16-year-old victim was sitting in front of the suspect in math class when she noticed a weird smell and realized her hair was burning.

The victim did not require medical treatment.
