PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Foul weather has halted attempts to bring down the body of a British Columbia man who fell to his death during a climb of Mount Hood.

Authorities say 58-year-old Robert Wiebe of Langley was in a party of five climbers that ran into bad weather Tuesday at about 9,500 feet.

Members of the group noticed that Wiebe was no longer visible and found that he had fallen. The climbers were not roped up.

Wiebe died before a rescue helicopter could get to him.

The Hood River County sheriff’s office says he was described as an experienced climber.

On Wednesday, search and rescue workers tried to recover his body, but they were turned back by snow, wind and poor visibility.

They said they would try again Thursday.
