PORT CHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Experts say the kind of election that allowed residents of one New York town to give six votes to one candidate this week could expand around the country.
The trustee election in Port Chester was an apparent success because a Latino was one of six winners. The unusual voting system had been ordered by a federal judge who found the existing system was unfair to Hispanics.
Expert Rob Richie says voting-rights lawsuits are likely to increase when the Census updates minority populations. He and others say those involved may decide to try the system Port Chester used as a solution.
Officials caution, however, that an extensive education program before the election may have been the key to success.
