COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Mark Whiten hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the Fellers past the Killebrews 9-0 in the Hall of Fame Classic at Doubleday Field.

Whiten, who beat Jeff Kent in the pregame hitting contest, hit a hard line-drive off Rollie Fingers into the bleachers in left center to drive in Bill Madlock, who had singled off the glove of third baseman Bert Campaneris in the bottom of the first.

Whiten, named the game’s MVP, added another two-run shot in the third and Robby Hisert of the Military All-Stars also homered.

A crowd of over 7,000 attended Sunday’s Classic, which replaced the annual Hall of Fame Game last year. The Classic featured Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Harmon Killebrew, Rollie Fingers, Phil Niekro, Gary Carter, Goose Gossage and Ozzie Smith, as well as 20 other former major leaguers.
