LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Southern Anthem surged into the lead at the eighth pole and held off a late charge from Caberneigh for a 112-length victory in the $57,130 feature race Sunday at Churchill Downs.
Ridden by Corey Lanerie for trainer Jeff Thornbury, Southern Anthem was eighth in the early going but swung out three wide at the head of the stretch to race past the leaders while covering the 1 1-8 miles on a firm turf course in 1:50.12.
Southern Anthem’s fourth victory in 18 starts was worth $35,400. It increased Southern Anthem’s earnings to $139,422.
Southern Anthem, the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Royal Anthem, returned $34.60, $13.60 and $5.60 in the race for 3 year olds and up.
Caberneigh paid $15.20 and $8. Forest Attack returned $4.80 to show.
