SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Efforts to clean up the Pend Oreille Mine site near Metaline Falls are moving forward.

The public comment period on cleanup plans opened Monday and will run until July 22. A final cleanup plan will come after that.

The site is owned by Teck Washington Inc., and has heavy metals contamination dating to the 1960s.

The state Department of Ecology says contaminants from the site have not reached drinking water, but groundwater flows toward the Pend Oreille River. The site is contaminated with iron, manganese, arsenic, mercury and other metals.
