JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — About 250 soldiers from the 5th Stryker brigade were welcomed home by their families Monday night at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The rest of the nearly 4,000 soldiers in the brigade will return in waves by the end of July.

The brigade was sent to Afghanistan last July as part of the troop surge.

The News Tribune of Tacoma reports 36 members have been reported killed, mostly in bomb blasts.

Five soldiers from the 5th Stryker brigade also have been charged with murder in the deaths of three Afghan civilians.
