SEATTLE (AP) — Lou Piniella is making the most of his return to Seattle.
Piniella went to lunch Tuesday with the top Mariners executives who first brought him to Seattle almost 20 years ago. Then, the Cubs manager visited the same Mariners staffers who were working for the team when he was in the Seattle dugout. And he admitted he got “teary eyed.”
Piniella was in town for the Cubs’ rare series against the Mariners. Sweet Lou says he still has wonderful memories of guiding Seattle into its baseball heyday of the 1990s.
Piniella also says he regrets that Ken Griffey Jr. abruptly retired weeks ago before he could reunite with him in this series. But Piniella says he got Griffey’s phone number from Mariners president Chuck Armstrong and plans to call him.
