LAS VEGAS (AP) — Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers has won the Calder Trophy as the NHL rookie of the year.

Myers won the award Wednesday at the NHL Awards ceremony, edging finalists Colorado center Matt Duchene and Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard.

Myers was one of four rookies to play all 82 games. He led the Sabres and all rookies by logging nearly 24 minutes of ice time per game. He was also first among rookies with 137 blocked shots, and third with 48 points.

Duchene, the No. 3 pick in the 2009 draft, led NHL rookies in scoring with 55 points. His 24 goals in 81 games matched the scoring total of the New York Islanders’ John Tavares, who was chosen first overall. The 18-year-old Duchene was second among rookies in assists.

Howard went 37-15-10 with a 2.26 goals-against average for the Red Wings.
