ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — The Aberdeen Fire Department will continue to protect the Stafford Creek prison, but at a much-lower rate.

The city council approved a three-year contract Thursday night for $50,000 a year, rising to $55,000 in the final year. The prison had been paying Aberdeen $84,000 a year for fire service but decided to switch to a better deal with the city of Westport.

The Aberdeen Daily World reports Westport backed out because of objections from the firefighters union, and Aberdeen agreed to lower its charges.
