ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals rookie third baseman David Freese has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, because of a bone bruise to his right ankle.
The Cardinals on Tuesday recalled right-handed reliever Fernando Salas from Triple-A Memphis. Salas is in his third stint with the team, this time returning after only three days with Memphis.
The 27-year-old Freese is batting .296 with four homers and 36 RBIs.
Freese has been hampered by the ankle injury since early June.
