Drill tests oil spill response on Columbia River

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — The Washington Department of Ecology is running an oil spill drill on the Columbia River near Kalama.

The exercise tests how state-regulated companies would respond to an actual oil spill.

The Columbian newspaper reports that recovery vessels are deploying oil containment booms and buoys Tuesday to try to corral potential crude though real oil will not be used.

Oil tankers, fuel barges and large cargo vessels make more than 2,300 transits a year in the Columbia River.
