WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan is assuring senators she has deep respect for the military and those who serve in it.
Answering questions on Day 2 of her confirmation hearings, Kagan said students at Harvard Law School had access to military recruiters. She suggested that reports detailing her brush with the military over it’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in uniform have been exaggerated. Kagan said veterans organizations were allowed to sponsor recruiters, instead of the school doing it.
Kagan told senators, “I said on many occasions that this was a great thing for our students to think about doing in their lives.”
She said Harvard had a strict anti-discriminatory policy, “and the military could not sign that pledge.”
