LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (AP) — The fight between two bald eagles was so loud and sounded so painful that nearby homeowner Teresa Dir called 911. A short time later, police in the Portland suburb of Lake Oswego and Oregon State Police used leather gloves and a heavy blanket to capture the loser. The bird was lying under a rhododendron bush. The other eagle flew off.

Veterinarian Deb Sheaffer manages the Audubon Society of Portland’s Wildlife Care Center. She’s now caring for the roughly 5-year-old adult male eagle, which suffered puncture wounds to one of his legs.

She says her center has cleaned the wounds and put the bird on antibiotics and is now watching to see how he responds. It’s too soon to know when the bird injured Sunday night might be well enough to be released.

She says the squabble might have been over territory or mating rights.
