SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Jeremy Guthrie pitched into the third inning in his second spring start, but the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 Sunday.

Guthrie threw 51 pitches and gave up a run and three hits in 2 1-3 innings. He walked two and struck out two — Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz. A year ago, the Orioles’ right-hander had only one start in spring training before leaving for the World Baseball Classic.

Clay Buchholz, one of six Red Sox pitchers competing for five starting slots, allowed three runs in three innings.

Nick Markakis hit his second home run of the spring. It was Baltimore’s 12th homer in five games.

Guthrie has thrown 4 1-3 innings in his two starts, allowing one run and three hits.
