Hamlin, Mazdzer, Niccum-Joye win USA Luge titles

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Erin Hamlin and Chris Mazdzer won the singles titles, and the team of Christian Niccum and Dan Joye won the doubles crown Sunday at USA Luge’s national championships.

The 2009 world champion, Hamlin won her third straight national title, finishing two runs in 1 minute, 30.371 seconds. Emily Sweeney was second, 0.743 seconds back. Julia Clukey won the bronze.

Mazdzer won the men’s national championship for the second time in four years. His time of 1:47.555 edged seven-time champion Tony Benshoof by 0.209 seconds, with Trent Matheson finishing third.

Niccum and Joye took the doubles title for the second time in three years, topping Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin by 0.633 seconds. Mazdzer teamed with Jayson Terdiman to place third.
