PROSSER, Wash. (AP) — A 5-year-old boy who drowned after falling into an irrigation canal east of Prosser has been identified by the Benton County sheriff’s office as Ty Phipps.

The boy and two cousins, ages 10 and 7, reportedly were throwing sticks into the canal on Saturday when Ty slipped and fell in. The sheriff’s office says the 10-year-old tried to save the boy but had to leave the canal when the current became too strong.

Sheriff’s deputies pulled the boy from the canal at the Chandler Dam, about a quarter mile from the back yard where he had been playing. Efforts to revive him failed.
