SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Times reports that a Coast Guard investigation concludes that a heavy load, an unsecured door and an “imprudent decision” to push into a huge storm were factors in the sinking of the fishing boat Katmai that killed seven crew members.
The Seattle-based boat went down Oct. 22, 2008, in the Bering Sea. Four people survived after spending 16 hours in a life raft that kept flipping over.
The Times says it obtained a copy of the Coast Guard report, which is to be made public next month. it says the report calls for mandatory training of fishing-boat captains, inspections of all fishing vessels, and improvements in crew training.
