EDMONDS, Wash. (AP) — A railroad spokesman says a woman has been hit and killed by a train near the Edmonds-Kingston ferry crossing in northern Washington state.

Guy Melonas, a spokesman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., says the train crew saw a woman run from behind a building and in front of the train about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. The engineer immediately employed the emergency brake, but the train struck the woman. She died at the scene.

The train was northbound from Tacoma to Everett and was traveling about 35 mph.

Melonas says the track reopened shortly after 8 a.m. He says the incident is being investigated by police and BNSF authorities.

Melonas says the victim hasn’t been identified yet. Authorities believe a vehicle parked nearby belonged to her.
