Saturday’s 19th Annual Walk for the Animals raised nearly $50,000 for the Humane Society for Southwest Washington, according to a news release from organizers.

Close to 1,000 people and more than 500 dogs turned out for the early morning walk and run along the Columbia River waterfront from Esther Short Park.

The event kicks off local celebration of national Be Kind to Animals Week. It is the Vancouver-based humane society’s second largest fundraiser of the year, behind its annual dinner and auction, which is held in October.

In addition to the running and walking, participants enjoyed live music, agility demonstrations, vendor booths and other pet-related activities.
