ZIEST, Netherlands (AP) — Ruud van Nistelrooy has been left out of the Netherlands’ 26-man training camp roster ahead of the World Cup.

The Hamburg forward retired from the Dutch team after the 2008 European Championship but has been hoping to get selected for the World Cup. Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk chose to leave him out of the group that will begin a training camp next Monday. Van Marwijk will announce his provisional roster May 11.

Van Nistelrooy’s teammates, Eljero Elia and Joris Mathijsen, were included in the training camp roster along with newcomers Jeremain Lens of AZ Alkmaar and Vurnon Anita of Ajax.

Bayern Munich’s Mark van Bommel and Arjen Robben, and Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder were left out because their clubs are in the European Champions League final on May 22.
