It was an effort fitting of a championship.
Taking control from the start of the match, the Camas Papermakers put the finishing touches on another Class 3A Greater St. Helens League boys soccer championship on Tuesday by beating Columbia River 4-0 at Kiggins Bowl.
“The most satisfying part is how well we played. We played very well today,” Camas coach Roland Minder said.
Four players scored goals and two others contributed assists as the Papermakers clinched the programs 11th league title in the past 12 seasons.
The league title means Camas will host a bi-district playoff match on May 15.
Camas is 9-0 in league play and has outscored its GSHL opponents 59-1. A 2-1 win on April 16 over second-place Columbia River (7-2 in league) was the most competitive league match.
On Tuesday, the Papermakers dominated. The Chieftains did not force Camas goalkeeper Zach Anderson to make any saves for the shutout win.
Camas’ first goal came about 12 minutes into the match. Connor Valenter finished a pass from Evan Klein, who had beaten the defense and centered the ball.
Klein started at center forward for the first time, as Minder shuffled his formation.
Nick Palodichuk made it 2-0 in the first half with an assist from Stuart Jergensen. In the second half, Wes Breitner and Drew White scored goals, with Valenter adding an assist.
“It’s nice to have certainty and to be able to look forward,” Minder said.
He also called the league title a nice accomplishment, but added that “it’s only a first step for where we want to go.”
Union 2, Hudson’s Bay 2 — Hudson Poissant had a goal and an assist as the visiting Titans won. Nick Haggerty also scored for Union. Sascha Pell tallied for the Eagles.
The tie clinched a district playoff berth for Hudson’s Bay. The Eagles will face Union next Tuesday at Camas High School for a spot in the bi-district playoffs.
Prairie 2, Fort Vancouver 1 — Joey Semro had a goal and an assist to lead the Falcons to their first league win of the season.
Evergreen 8, Battle Ground 1 — Evergreen clinched at least a tie for the 4A Greater St. Helens League championship. One player scored a hat trick, and another set a school record for assists.
Yeah, it was a good day for the Plainsmen.
Jake Gulliford scored three goals and assisted on another as the Plainsmen rolled to an 8-1 victory over Battle Ground. Evergreen improved to 8-1 in the 4A GSHL, a one game lead over Skyview with one to play. Evergreen plays Mountain View on Thursday to close the regular season, while Skyview faces Heritage.
Cody Camp had three assists against the Tigers, giving him a school-record 16 this season. He also added a goal.
Septi Danciu, meanwhile, added to his own school record for goals in a season. He found the net twice.
Skyview 7, Kelso 0 — Sean Chesebro scored three goals and Sean Price two, and the visiting Storm scored all seven goals before halftime to stay in the hunt for a share of the Class 4A GSHL title.
Mountain View 1, Heritage 0 — Connor Lien scored off an assist from Jeff Carmody, and the Thunder moved past Heritage into third place in the 4A GSHL.
