MADRID (AP) — Rafael Nadal believes he is in the right physical and mental shape going into this week’s Madrid Masters.
The third-ranked Spaniard says he is “fresh” and “calm” as he prepares to compete in Madrid, where he lost in last year’s final to Roger Federer.
He goes into this year’s tournament having won two other clay-court titles, in Monte Carlo and Rome, and says these wins have given him a psychological boost.
Nadal has a bye into the second round, where he will meet the winner of the match between Andreas Seppi of Italy and a qualifier.
