MIDDELBURG, Netherlands (AP) — Wouter Weylandt edged Graeme Brown of Australia in a sprint finish Monday to take the third stage of the Giro d’Italia, the last in the Netherlands before the race heads back to Italy.
The Belgian broke away from the main pack in the final yards to finish the stage in 5 hours, 6 seconds.
Cadel Evans, hoping to become the Giro’s first Australian winner, lost the overall lead to Alexandre Vinokourov of Russia.
Tuesday is a rest day. The 21-stage event resumes Wednesday. The grueling 2,133-mile race ends May 30 in Verona.
