OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) — A Gresham man has received the death penalty for the revenge killing of an immigrant from Sierra Leone.

Mike Washington Jr. did not speak at the hearing Monday in which Clackamas County jurors announced their decision. The Oregonian newspaper reports a judge will formally sentence Washington next week.

Washington was convicted last month of aggravated murder in the death of Mohamed Jabbie.

Prosecutors say Washington assaulted Jabbie in July 2004 and shot him to death two months later after Jabbie testified against him before a grand jury.

Jabbie legally immigrated to the U.S. in 1996 and worked as a medical transport assistant.

Jabbie and Washington crossed paths in early 2004, when Jabbie started dating Washington’s longtime girlfriend.
