SEATTLE (AP) — A 42-year-old man has been convicted of second-degree manslaughter in the 2009 death of his 88-year-old mother. Prosecutors in the King County Superior Court trial of Christopher Wise said Ruby Wise weighed only 70 pounds and was covered in deep bedsores when she died last June 16 at her home. Her son was her caregiver.

Prosecutors called it one of the worst elder abuse cases they had ever seen.

Jurors had deliberated for about a day before returning their verdict Tuesday against the Black Diamond man.

The King County medical examiner’s office attributed the woman’s death to complications from eight large bedsores.

Wise testified last week that he loved his mother. He said he was following her instructions that she wanted to die at home.
