LONDON (AP) — Britain’s new Olympics minister says the budget for the 2012 London Games is “not protected” from planned spending cuts by the new coalition government.

Jeremy Hunt was appointed Wednesday as Secretary of State for Culture, Media, the Olympics and Sport. He will serve in the Cabinet of Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, who came to power in a coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

Hunt says the government’s $14.9 billion Olympic budget is not immune from cuts.

He told the BBC Newsnight program that “Olympic money is not protected.”

But Hunt stressed that the Olympics are a top priority and a “once-in-a lifetime chance to showcase the country.”
