MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Haile Gebrselassie has won the Great Manchester Run for the third time, but strong winds kept him from posting a fast time in the 10-kilometer race.
The 37-year-old Gebrselassie finished in 28 minutes, 2 seconds, which was 23 seconds off his winning time last year.
Gebrselassie says that “the only problem out there today was again in the wind.”
He finished 7 seconds ahead of Ayad Lamdassem, a former Moroccan who is now representing Spain. Sergiy Lebid of Ukraine was third.
Worknesh Kidane of Ethiopia won the women’s race in 31:19 and beat Jessica Augusto of Portugal by 32 seconds. Ines Monteiro, also of Portugal, was third.
