DENVER (AP) — The Washington Nationals have designated right-hander reliever Brian Bruney for assignment and purchased the contract of reliever Drew Storen.
The team announced the move after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Colorado.
Storen, the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft, has been dominant in the minor leagues this season. He had four saves, a 1.12 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 16 innings for Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse. He will join the team in St. Louis on Monday.
Bruney has struggled in a set-up role this season, going 1-2 with a 7.64 ERA in 19 games. He allowed three runs in one inning in a 6-2 loss to the Rockies on Saturday.
If he clears waivers, manager Jim Riggleman hopes Bruney takes an assignment to Syracuse.
