Ore. voters reject Portland-area casino measure

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon voters have turned back a proposal to build the state’s first non-tribal casino in a suburb of Portland.

Two Lake Oswego businessmen and a Canadian investment firm had hoped to build the casino at the site of the former Multnomah Kennel Club in Wood Village. They argued the $250,000 million casino would create jobs and generate revenue for state and local government.

But opponents said the casino would take money out of Oregon while harming the state lottery and taking business from tribal casinos that rely on gambling income to pay for government services.

Measure 75 would have allowed Toronto-based Clairvest Group Inc., to build a $250 million casino. It would have been the state’s first private casino.
