New Seattle seawall could include small beaches

SEATTLE (AP) — A new seawall along the downtown Seattle waterfront could include a couple of small beaches where people could dip their toes in Elliott Bay.

Another option calls for pushing out the seawall to create more public space.

Those are some of the choices in five design concepts the Seattle Transportation Department is considering for the $285 million project.

The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce reports the designs were recently presented to property owners and others who will be affected.

The two-and-a-half year construction project could begin in 2012.

Officials say the current seawall may not withstand an earthquake. Concrete is failing and marine organisms are eating away at timber supports.
