FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — New England Revolution star Taylor Twellman says he’s retiring because of the effects of a concussion.

Twellman, the leading goal scorer in team history, announced his retirement at a news conference Wednesday two years after the concussion. His 101 goals are sixth most in MLS history.

The concussion occurred on Aug. 30, 2008, when Twellman was struck in the head by goalkeeper Steve Cronin of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Twellman played the final eight regular-season games that season but sat out the playoffs.

The 30-year-old Twellman, the second pick in the 2002 draft and a five-time MLS all-star, appeared in just two games last year and didn’t play at all this year.
