YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle has received a $4.7 million grant for cancer prevention programs aimed at the Hispanic population in central Washington’s agricultural Yakima Valley.

The award from the National Cancer Institute extends and broadens a five-year study which began in 2005 to increase cancer awareness among Hispanics there.

Dr. Beti Thompson of the Hutchinson Center’s Public Health Sciences Division says about half of the money will go toward research. The rest will be used to continue education and outreach efforts.
