JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa’s World Cup organizer Danny Jordaan has confirmed his candidacy for a seat on FIFA’s executive committee.
Jordaan told The Associated Press on Friday that he will stand in an election for a place on soccer’s highest body at the African Football Confederation conference in Sudan in February.
Jordaan points out key organizers from recent World Cups have been voted onto FIFA’s executive committee, but says he is not overconfident despite the success of Africa’s first tournament.
He says, “Elections are a strange thing … we shall see.”
Two of the four African places on the executive committee, including the one held by suspended Nigerian official Amos Adamu, come up for re-election next year.
