Ivory Coast withdraws ambassador from Senegal

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Senegal says Ivory Coast is recalling its ambassador over allegations that Senegal’s president supported an opposition leader in Ivory Coast’s contentious elections.

Senegalese government spokesman Moustapha Guirassy says the West African nation did not interfere in Ivorian politics. He did not comment on whether President Abdoulaye Wade invited or supported opposition frontrunner Alassane Ouattara.

Ouattara will face President Laurent Gbagbo on Nov. 28 in what is likely to be a tense runoff that could restore stability to the world’s biggest cocoa producer after a decade of unrest.

Gbagbo gained first place in the Oct. 31 poll with just over 38 percent of the vote, compared to about 32 for Ouattara — both short of the 50 percent needed to avoid a second round.
