GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a Gig Harbor woman was attacked by a black bear Sunday morning while she was walking her dog.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that the woman was walking in a wooded area with her unleashed dog when bear appeared. The dog chased after the bear when they encountered it. The woman then went to retrieve the dog and got between the dog and the bear. The bear attacked.

Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer says the woman was later found by another person walking near the area.

Troyer say she has severe bite wounds on her arm and bite marks on her back but is in good spirits at a Tacoma hospital. The dog survived.

Capt. Dan Brinson of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says the bear will be trapped and euthanized.
