ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott says a 74-year-old Lakewood man missing for nearly two days in the woods near Humptulips died shortly after rescuers found him.

Scott told KOMO-TV Alois Welle was breathing, but unconscious and suffering from extreme hypothermia when he was located on Tuesday.

Welle separated from his hunting party early Monday morning. The group had been staying in contact via two-way radios, but Welle did not show up when the group met at the end of the day.

Welle’s family said he was dressed for the elements, but had health issues and didn’t have any food and water.
