NEW YORK (AP) — George Steinbrenner and baseball historian and official scorer Bill Shannon have been voted posthumous awards by the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Steinbrenner, who owned the New York Yankees from 1973 until his death at age 80 on July 13, was voted the Joan Payson Award for community service at the chapter’s annual meeting Tuesday.

Shannon, an official scorer since 1979, author of the book “The Ballparks” and longtime contributor to The Associated Press, died Oct. 26 in a house fire at age 69. He was voted the William J. Slocum-Jack Lang Award for Long and Meritorious Service.

The awards will be presented at the annual New York BBWAA dinner on Jan. 22.
