Employers face possible 12% workers’ comp hike

Employers in Washington could face a 12 percent jump in workers’ compensation insurance premiums on Jan. 1. The state made the proposal on Monday, less than one week after Washington voters turned down Initiative 1082, a measure to allow private insurance companies to compete with the state’s public insurance fund for workers who get hurt on the job.

The proposed workers’ comp increase follows a 2010 rate increase of 7.6 percent. Under the 12 percent increase, average premiums would go up by about 6.5 cents per hour worked.
