Florida A&M beats Hampton 17-12

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Philip Sylvester rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown Saturday, and Florida A&M held on for a 17-12 win over Hampton.

Sylvester’s 79-yard touchdown run gave the Rattlers (7-3, 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

Austin Trainor scored on a 5-yard run that put the Rattlers ahead 14-3 with 11:26 left in the first half, and Trevor Scott added a 25-yard field goal with six seconds left for a 17-6 lead.

Trainor was 14 of 31 passing for 156 yards for the Rattlers, who are tied for second in the conference with South Carolina State and play first-place Bethune-Cookman next Saturday.

Hampton (5-5, 4-3) closed to within five, 17-12, when Javaris Brown scored on a 22-yard pass from David Legree with 9:28 left.

Legree was 18 of 38 passing for 299 yards, and Brown finished with eight catches for 141 yards.
