NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets have fired a longtime clubhouse manager amid a police investigation into illegal gambling.
The Mets say Charlie Samuels was fired Friday. This season was his 27th year on the job. He also helped handle the team’s travel arrangements.
The Mets said they fired Samuels for violating team policies. The club said the decision came after an internal investigation that lasted several months.
A person familiar with the probe by law enforcement told The Associated Press last week that Samuels admitted to an investigator for Major League Baseball that he bet on baseball. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
