Utah State tops Weber State 77-65 in season opener

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Brockeith Pane scored 20 points and Tai Wesley added 19 to lead Utah State past in-state rival Weber State 77-65 Saturday night in the season opener for both schools.

Paine also got a team-high four assists while Wesley snared a team-high nine rebounds for the Aggies. Damian Lillard led the Wildcats with 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting.

Weber State led throughout the first half, was up 36-29 at halftime and still in charge at 45-37 with 15:30 to play following a pair of 3-point shots by Lillard. Utah State then went on a 17-0 run over the next five minutes, keyed by eight points from Paine, for a 46-36 lead.

The Wildcats closed to within 63-59 with 4:40 remaining, but Paine scored seven points in the final four minutes and Brian Green scored the Aggies’ only 3-pointer in the game to keep Weber State at bay.
