WALLA WALLA, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state Corrections spokeswoman says nearly 400 inmates at the Washington State Penitentiary remain locked in their cells after an inmate fight left nine officers with minor injuries.

Shari Hall says Sunday’s fight at the Walla Walla prison started with two offenders and escalated to involve nearly 50.

She said late Monday afternoon that two prison units housing 187 inmates each remain on lockdown.

An investigation into the cause of the fight continues.

KONA Radio says the fight occurred in the entry area of one of the units as inmates were returning from an outdoor recreation period.
