WARREN, Mass. (AP) — A 16-year-old boy has collapsed and died while playing in a junior varsity football game in Massachusetts.

Michael Ellsessar was taken by ambulance after collapsing early in Monday’s game at Quaboag (QUAY’-bog) Regional High School in Warren, about 60 miles west of Boston. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Ellsessar attended Sutton High School, which shares a football team with a high school in nearby Oxford.

A spokesman for the Worcester District Attorney’s office, Tim Connolly, says a referee attempted CPR on the teen before he was taken to the hospital.

Connolly said an autopsy is expected to be performed on Tuesday to determine cause of death.
