American holds off Maryland-Eastern Shore 65-58

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vlad Moldoveanu shook off foul trouble to score 18 of his season-high 31 points inside the final 6 minutes to help American University to a 65-58 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday night.

Moldoveanu, who picked up his second and third fouls early in the second half, returned as the Hawks tied it at 45. He then hit an inside basket, three consecutive 3-pointers and seven of 10 foul shots as the Eagles (3-0) took a 56-50 lead and then held on.

Kevin White scored 19 points for the Hawks (0-3), including two foul shots to close it to 60-58, as Maryland-Eastern Shore lost its first nonconference trip to Washington since December 2005.

Stephen Lumpkins added 12 points for American, which led by 11 earlier in the second half.
