SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A man who wounded a police officer in a shootout in Salem pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated murder.

The Statesman Journal reports Billy Jack Gray also pleaded guilty Wednesday to robbery and burglary charges.

His lawyer says by taking responsibility, the 23-year-old hopes to get out of prison some time in the future. He’ll be sentenced in January.

Gray shot Woodburn police Sgt. John Mikkola in March as officers were investigating a burglary. Gray was critically wounded by another officer. Mikkola recovered and has returned to work. Both men still have bullets in their bodies.
