France: NASCAR still looking at Chase changes

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — NASCAR chairman Brian France says discussions on changes to the championship format are ongoing even though this year’s title race is the closest in years.

France said earlier this year that NASCAR would consider various offseason changes to its Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format. He wanted a system that set up “Game 7” type moments that rivaled other professional spots leagues.

NASCAR has achieved that climactic ending this season. Three drivers are going into Sunday’s season finale with a chance to win the title.

Denny Hamlin leads four-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson by 15 points, while Kevin Harvick is 46 points out. It’s the tightest final race since the Chase debuted in 2004.
