ORONO, Maine (AP) — Jonathon Williams and Taveion Cuffee led a goal-line stand on the final play as James Madison held on for a 14-10 victory over Maine Saturday.
It was the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season finale for both teams. On second-and-goal from the 3, the Black Bears (4-7, 3-5) tried to win the game on Warren Smith’s pass to Jeff Falvey in the right flat. But Williams and Cuffee stopped Falvey for no gain as time expired.
The Dukes (6-5, 3-5) took the lead for good 14-7 on Dae’Quan Scott’s 43-yard touchdown run with 12:15 left in the third quarter.
Scott also had a hand in the Dukes’ first scoring drive. His 34-yard pass to Renard Robinson put James Madison at the Maine 13. Six plays later, Jamal Sullivan scored on a 3-yard run to tie it 7-7 with 55 seconds left in the first half.
Smith scored Maine’s touchdown on a 4-yard run with 8:55 left in the first quarter.
